Interreg Aurora Small Scale Project: Sustainable Visitor Access in Arctic Research and Science Environments

The Municipality of Sodankylä and Luleå University of Technology (LTU) Space Campus Kiruna are jointly implementing an Interreg Aurora Small Scale Project focused on the relationship between Arctic research environments, science communication and sustainable tourism.

The project explores the conditions under which research and science environments can be made more accessible to visitors without compromising research activities, safety requirements or environmental sustainability. The work focuses on identifying opportunities, limitations and practical models that support responsible visitor engagement.

During the project, research and science environments in Sodankylä and Kiruna are mapped and analysed, with particular attention given to operational conditions, governance structures, visitor access and science communication. The project partners compare their findings and develop recommendations for future cooperation and development.

The project also supports the planning of the Aurora Science Centre, a unique initiative that aims to connect Arctic research, education, tourism and regional development. Through international cooperation and benchmarking, the project provides valuable insights into how scientific knowledge and research environments can be transformed into engaging and accessible experiences for different audiences.

As a preparatory initiative, the Small Scale Project will provide the foundation for a future Interreg Aurora Regular Project, which aims to move from analysis into practical development, pilot activities and long-term cross-border cooperation between research organisations, tourism actors and regional development stakeholders.
