Science Centre Aurora has entered the planning phase

The goal is to open Science Center Aurora in 2030.

The Municipality of Sodankylä and the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO) launched a preliminary study in early 2024 to explore the concept of Science Center Aurora. The Science Center would bring together space science, Arctic natural phenomena, and sustainable mining in a way not seen before – forming an inspiring, experience-driven destination for both locals and visitors. The preliminary study was completed in January 2025, resulting in the project’s first concept plan.

In June 2025, the project advanced to a new phase as the Municipality of Sodankylä assumed primary responsibility. Collaboration with SGO continues, and the search for an extensive partner network is now underway. Developing an international visitor destination requires long-term commitment, dedicated partners, and sustainable funding – these will be the focus in the next stage of planning.

The goal is to open Science Center Aurora in 2030. The center will offer visitors an engaging and immersive way to experience Arctic science, combining state-of-the-art technology with compelling storytelling. In addition to interactive exhibitions, plans include a hotel and service complex that will enhance the appeal of Sodankylä’s town center and strengthen the vitality of the wider Lapland region.

Appointed in April 2025, project specialist Sofia Karimäki is responsible for overall coordination, including administrative and business model development as well as planning management. The Municipality of Sodankylä will continue to lead the project until a permanent governance and operational structure is established.

Science Center Aurora is intended to become a key destination for a wide audience – from local school groups and families to domestic and international travelers. The center will combine local identity, Lapland’s unique natural environment, and scientific research in a storytelling and inspiring way. Exhibitions will incorporate the latest technologies – including virtual, augmented, and extended reality, as well as Deep Space 8K visualizations – offering a multi-sensory, in-depth visitor experience.
